Types of Termites in a Colony

Types of Termites in a Colony

Termite colonies have several types of members, including soldiers, workers, and reproductive members. Each of these has functions to perform for the colony.

All types of termites start out in egg form and are fertilized by the king, the reproductive male, who fertilizes the eggs laid by the queen. The eggs hatch and turn into larvae which are very small, about the same size as the original egg. These larvae grow and molt five times to accommodate new growth. They then turn into any of the three types of termites, all of which have different appearances. Research has shown that somehow the right number of each is developed based on the needs of the colony. Exactly how this occurs is not known.

The queen is responsible for laying thousands of eggs and keeping the colony supplied with new members. The king, which is the male reproductive member, will fertilize the eggs laid by the queen. The queen can live for up to 50 years under the right weather and other conditions, although 15-20 would be more likely, so a colony can last a very long time. A colony can have more than one queen at the same time.

Workers and soldiers on the other hand only live for one or two years. Neither of these are sexually mature, and they cannot reproduce. Soldiers develop large heads with pincers, and these are used to confront and ward off enemies of the colony like ants. Because of this large armor, soldiers cannot feed themselves and so they are fed by workers. Workers will locate food and will feed all the other groups of termites in the colony. They will take care of the queen’s eggs and the larvae as well. They also build the nest and build tunnels and chambers in it for the colony to live and maneuver around. Some termites called drywood termites nest in the wood they are attacking.

The reproductive termites, which are black and resemble flying ants, have two pairs of wings. They will eventually leave the nest together in a swarm, mate, fly to another location and attempt to found a new colony. After they mate they drop their wings, and seeing a pile of small wings lying around is an indicator that termites might not be far away.
